Success Story: Kaiser Permanente - Epic Implementation
Project: A massive conversion from their initial custom-built legacy Clinical Information System to the successful implementation of a customized Electronic Medical Records (EMR) solution from Epic Systems known as KP HealthConnect.
Executive Summary/Business Case: Although Kaiser Permanente of Colorado implemented a Clinical Information System in the late 90's to retire paper charts and automate some aspects of their business, they still found the handling of many disparate systems crippling as they continued to strive to deliver better service to their customers - both internal and external. Conversion from the original EMR solution to the integrated EMR system from Epic Systems promised to save them a great deal of money in the long run, while at the same time improving their service delivery. Kaiser of Colorado was one of the first Kaiser regions in an enterprise-wide effort to convert to the EMR solution from Epic. Other regions of Kaiser are benefiting from the Colorado "big bang" approach of implementation.
How CONNECT Helped: Having established a working relationship with Kaiser on its initial CIS project, CONNECT was called upon again to provide implementation assistance. At its peak, this aggressive implementation project found over 60 CONNECT consultants onsite during implementation, providing everything from project management to clinical content, testing, training and implementation support throughout the 20-month-phased project. The Epic modules include patient appointment, physician scheduling, electronic medical records, billing, co-pay and revenue recognition.
Excellent Performance Delivery: Against all odds, the client-consultant team delivered modules of the Epic solution on time and to rave reviews from the users. The phased approach continues into 2005. But, three major deployments, including the third deployment of a new clinic and the first partner hospital were successfully completed before year-end 2004, as scheduled.
CONNECT played a major role in assuring the project's success.
"We could not have succeeded without CONNECT," a project leader stated. "CONNECT was there to support our goals - whatever it took," she went on to say.
"We pride ourselves in doing ‘whatever it takes’ to exceed our client's expectations," stated CONNECT CEO Maureen Clarry. "We are very proud of our part in this enormous project." Clarry went on to praise the efforts of her team, spearheaded by Account Executive Tammy Guthmiller, and Recruiters Cindi Cordova, Julie Hoelsken and Karen Klein, all of whom participated in sourcing 65% of the talent for the phased project.
