Denison Organizational Culture Survey

Power, Politics and Partnership combines the Denison Organizational Culture Survey with The Organization Workshop to provide a valid and reliable way to measure the bottom-line business results of cultural interventions, including The Organization Workshop.

The Denison Organizational Culture Survey is based on 15 years of research conducted at the University of Michigan on over 1,000 organizations and 40,000 individuals. It uses 60 items to focus on four cultural traits that have been shown to have a significant impact on organizational performance in areas such as profitability, market share, sales growth, quality, innovation, and employee and customer satisfaction. So, it speaks the language of business in a highly intuitive format that appeals to senior executives.

Application

This surprisingly affordable instrument has many potential uses for your organization.

  • As a baseline assessment of current cultural strengths and weaknesses, relative to other organizations - with a norming base of over 500 companies
  • As a benchmark against which to target change efforts
  • As a process to assist with integration efforts in a merger
  • As a method to analyze cultural factors that are contributing to a company's difficulty responding to change
  • As a way for a new CEO or top leader to rapidly understand and interpret the organizational strengths and weaknesses
  • As a tool for understanding whether or not the necessary cultural conditions exist to support the successful implementation of a new strategic initiative
  • As a technique to identify the key cultural elements which are acting as barriers to customer service

The instrument teaches executives the culture-making process, helps them prioritize their change initiatives, creates a platform where broader involvement in the change process is encouraged, and it can be used to measure the impact of cultural interventions when used in a test-retest scenario.

CONNECT has experienced great success with many clients in using the Denison survey in combination with The Organization Workshop. The Organization Workshop exposes and challenges many of the tacit beliefs and assumptions we all hold about our role in organization. One such belief, held by many employees, is that higher ups are responsible for the condition of the organization. After all, “that’s why they make the big bucks!” Organizational surveys can exacerbate this belief, as employees view the survey as an opportunity to grade top management. After participating in The Organization Workshop, employees more readily see their vital role in improving the organization.

Logistics

The 60-item, anonymous survey takes about ten minutes to complete and is available on-line, allowing employees to take the survey at their convenience.

The survey can be customized to include specific questions and the data can be segmented in many ways to maximize its application for your organization.

Fees vary based on the size of your organization.

"I sponsored and attended the Power, Politics and Partnership Workshop for members of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield's management team in the summer of 2003. This organizational workshop provides keen insights into forces that are in play in our organizations every day. It is a fabulous tool for leaders. You will learn a great deal about leadership positions that help you achieve successful partnerships with customers, colleagues, and business partners. Anyone in a management or leadership position will benefit from an investment of time in this organizational seminar. The two days were enjoyable, fun and increased the energy level of our team. It's always difficult to find time to be out of the office for a day and a half, but this workshop is well worth your time and effort!"
